WHEN THE VACUUM CHAMBER IS PUMPED DOWN TO A LOW PRESSURE AND THEN BACK FILLED WITH AR TO A FEW MILLITORR AND A NEGATIVE VOLTAGE IS APPLIED TO THE MAGNETRONS, GLOW DISCHARGE PLASMA OCCURS. THE NEGATIVE VOLTAGE DRAWS THE AR IONS FROM THE PLASMA TO THE METAL TARGETS MOUNTED ON THE MAGNETRONS, RESULTED IN THE SPUTTERING OF METALLIC ATOMS OFF THE SURFACES. WHEN THE METALLIC ATOMS ARRIVE AT THE PART SURFACES, A METALLIC COATING IS FORMED. ALL METALLIC TARGETS CAN BE MADE OF A METAL WITH A SINGLE ELEMENT SUCH AS CR OR AN ALLOY SUCH AS NI20CR. IN ADDITION, IF THE DEPOSITION SYSTEM HAS MULTIPLE (FOR INSTANCE, TWO) MAGNETRONS, DIFFERENT METAL OR ALLOY TARGETS CAN BE USED AND SPUTTER DEPOSITED ON THE PARTS. THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SWRI PEMS PROCESS AND THE CONVENTIONAL MAGNETRON SPUTTERING PROCESS IS THE INTRODUCTION OF THE GLOBAL PLASMA GENERATED BY A THERMIONIC ELECTRON SOURCE (FILAMENT), AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1B. THE GLOBAL PLASMA GREATLY INCREASES PLASMA DENSITY OR ION FLUX TO THE SAMPLE SURFACE, LEADING TO TWO BENEFITS: THOROUGH CLEANING OF THE SURFACE PRIOR TO THE FILM DEPOSITION AND INTENSE ION BOMBARDMENT OF THE FILM DURING ITS GROWTH. A THOROUGH CLEANING PROCESS IS ESSENTIAL TO GOOD COATING ADHESION, WHILE THE INTENSE ION BOMBARDMENT DURING THE FILM GROW INCREASES THE FILM DENSITY AND THE COATING ADHESION. SHOWN IN FIGURE 2A IS A NI-20CR-10AL COATING (53 M) WITH NITRIDE DIFFUSION LAYERS (0.3 M), WHILE FIGURE 2B A HAYNES 160 COATING (37NI-29CO-28CR-2*FE-2.75SI) OF 37 M THICK.
