THESE RECOMMENDED SET OF CROSS SECTIONS FOR THE COMPUTATION OF THERMOSPHERIC PARAMETERS WILL ENABLE RELIABLE BENCHMARK COMPARISONS BETWEEN PLANETARY AIRGLOW MODELS WITHOUT AMBIGUITIES ASSOCIATED WITH DIFFERENT SOURCES OF CROSS SECTION DATA. WE HAVE USED THESE DATA TO DEMONSTRATE THE PRESENCE OF LONG-TERM TRENDS AND SOLAR CYCLE VARIATIONS IN PMC BRIGHTNESS AND OCCURRENCE FREQUENCY. WE PROPOSE TO EXTEND OUR STUDY OF THE SBUV/2 DATABASE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE FORCING MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE-FOR INTER-HEMISPHERIC AND INTER-ANNUAL VARIATIONS IN PMC FORMATION AND BEHAVIOR. KEY RESEARCH TOPICS THAT WE PROPOSE TO ADDRESS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS: 1. PMCS SHOW SUBSTANTIAL HORIZONTAL STRUCTURE ON SCALES RANGING FROM A FEW KILOMETERS TO TENS OF KILOMETERS THAT CANNOT BE RESOLVED BY SBUV/2 INSTRUMENTS. THE BRIGHTNESS AND DISTRIBUTION OF SUCH STRUCTURES IMPACTS OUR ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF OUR TREND RESULTS. SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER RESOLUTION PMC DATA ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE CIPS INSTRUMENT ON THE AIM SPACECRAFT AND THE OMI INSTRUMENT ON THE AURA SPACECRAFT. WE WILL COMPARE DATA FROM THESE INSTRUMENTS TO CO-LOCATED MEASUREMENT FROM THE THREE OPERATIONAL SBUV/2 INSTRUMENTS TO PROPERLY UNDERSTAND THEIR DATA. 2. PMCS ALSO SHOW SIGNIFICANT VARIABILITY IN BRIGHTNESS AND OCCURRENCE FREQUENCY ON TIME SCALES OF DAYS TO WEEKS DURING INDIVIDUAL SEASONS, AND FROM ONE SEASON TO THE NEXT EVEN WHEN SOLAR ACTIVITY IS RELATIVELY CONSTANT. RECENT STUDIES SHOW EVIDENCE FOR A LINK BETWEEN STRATOSPHERIC CONDITIONS IN THE WINTER HEMISPHERE AND PMC PROPERTIES IN (HE SUMMER HEMISPHERE. WE WILL EXTEND THIS ANALYSIS USING OUR SBUV DATA SET TO IMPROVE THE ACCURACY OF OUR LONG-TERM TREND CALCULATIONS. 3. PREDICTIONS OF MESOSPHERIC SUPER-SATURATION REGIONS FROM A NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY PROTOTYPE NUMERICAL WEATHER PREDICTION MODEL (NOGAPS-ALPHA) FOR THE NH SUMMER 2007 SEASON CORRELATE WELL WITH SATELLITE AND GROUND- BASED OBSERVATION OF PMCS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS EFFORT IS TO PRODUCE AN ENHANCED AND CONSISTENT GLOBAL L-BAND BRIGHTNESS TEMPERATURE AND SOIL MOISTURE CLIMATE DATA RECORD BASED ON DATA FROM THE SMAP AND SMOS SATELLITES. THIS EFFORT WILL ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVE OF THE NRA: DEVELOPMENT OF SIMILAR DATA PRODUCTS THAT ADD SUBSTANTIAL VALUE TO THE EXISTING PRODUCT. WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP A MULTI-SATELLITE SOIL MOISTURE PRODUCT USING L-BAND OBSERVATIONS FROM SMAP AND SMOS OBSERVATIONS THAT WOULD HAVE AN INCREASED GLOBAL REVISIT FREQUENCY AND PERIOD OF RECORD THAT WOULD BE UNATTAINABLE BY EITHER ONE OF THE SATELLITES ALONE. THE STANDARD SMAP RADIOMETER-ONLY SOIL MOISTURE PRODUCT CURRENTLY HAS A REVISIT FREQUENCY OF ABOUT 3 DAYS. WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP A MULTI-SATELLITE SOIL MOISTURE PRODUCT USING L-BAND OBSERVATIONS FROM VARIOUS SMAP AND SMOS MISSIONS. THE AVAILABILITY OF SOIL MOISTURE OBSERVATIONS USING ALL AVAILABLE SMAP AND SMOS BRIGHTNESS TEMPERATURE OBSERVATIONS WILL REDUCE THE REVISIT TIME TO ABOUT 1 DAY. TO ENSURE CONSISTENCY IN THE CLIMATE DATA RECORD IT IS CRITICAL TO USE THE SAME RETRIEVAL ALGORITHM(S) AND ANCILLARY DATA FOR BOTH SMAP AND SMOS OBSERVATIONS. THE SMOS SOIL MOISTURE ALGORITHM MAKES USE OF MULTI-ANGLE OBSERVATIONS AND CANNOT BE APPLIED TO SMAP BRIGHTNESS TEMPERATURE OBSERVATIONS ACQUIRED AT A FIXED INCIDENCE ANGLE; THEREFORE, SMOS BRIGHTNESS TEMPERATURE OBSERVATIONS MUST BE ADJUSTED TO THE SMAP CONFIGURATION. TO ACHIEVE THIS, SMOS BRIGHTNESS TEMPERATURE OBSERVATIONS WILL BE REPROCESSED, THUS PROVIDING ESSENTIALLY THE SAME LEVEL 1 RADIOMETER PRODUCT AS THE SMAP RADIOMETER (SMOS-SMAP). SMOS-SMAP BRIGHTNESS TEMPERATURE OBSERVATIONS WERE EXTENSIVELY USED DURING SMAP CALIBRATION/VALIDATION (CAL/VAL) REHEARSALS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SMAP LEVEL 2 PASSIVE SOIL MOISTURE ALGORITHM. THE INTEGRATED SOIL MOISTURE PRODUCT WILL USE THE SAME SOIL MOISTURE RETRIEVAL ALGORITHM(S) THAT ARE USED TO PRODUCE THE SMAP L2SMP PRODUCT. THE AVAILABILITY OF BOTH AM AND PM OBSERVATIONS WILL FURTHER INCREASE THE REVISIT FREQUENCY AND PROVIDE ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS FOR IMPROVED MODELING AND DATA ASSIMILATION STUDIES. THE 6 PM SOIL MOISTURE OBSERVATIONS WILL PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THAT CAN BE USED TO STUDY THE DIURNAL VARIABILITY OF WATER CYCLE. THE PROPOSED INTEGRATED SOIL MOISTURE PRODUCT WILL BE VALIDATED USING IN SITU OBSERVATIONS FROM ALL SUITABLE SMAP CALIBRATION/VALIDATION SITES. THE SUCCESS CRITERION FOR THE INTEGRATED PRODUCT WILL BE SIMILAR TO THE SMAP SUCCESS CRITERION. AN INTEGRATED PRODUCT WILL RESULT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LONGER AND CONSISTENT BRIGHTNESS TEMPERATURE AND SOIL MOISTURE CLIMATE DATA RECORDS.
