PRODUCE SUFFICIENT ANODE MATERIAL BASED ON THESE TECHNOLOGIES, AND COMPATIBLE OVER-LITHIATED NMC-BASED CATHODE MATERIAL, TO MANUFACTURE AT LEAST TEN CYLINDRICAL 6AH CELLS. PRODUCE THESE CYLINDRICAL CELLS USING STANDARD MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES. A PORTION OF THESE CELLS WILL BE SUBJECTED TO STEADY-STATE CHARACTERIZATION TESTING AT PSI. THE REMAINING CELLS WILL BE DELIVERED TO NASA FOR THEIR TESTING. TECHNICAL OBJECTIVES TECHNICAL OBJECTIVE 1: PRODUCE>125AH OF ANODE ELECTRODE MATERIAL AT A PILOT CASTING FACILITY AND DEMONSTRATE A COMPOSITE ANODE CAPACITY OF>1000MAH/G ON TESTING IN CONSTRUCTED POUCH AND CYLINDRICAL CELLS. TECHNICAL OBJECTIVE 2: DEMONSTRATE A CELL ENERGY DENSITY OF 260WH/KG FOR THE CYLINDRICAL CELLS. TECHNICAL OBJECTIVE 3: DEMONSTRATE<20% FADE OVER 100 CYCLES FOR THE CYLINDRICAL CELLS. TASK DESCRIPTION\TIMELINE TASK 1: SCALE-UP/MATERIAL SYNTHESIS THIS TASK WILL FOCUS ON THE SCALE-UP AND PRODUCTION OF THE PSI SILICON WHISKER AND CARBON NANOFIBER COMPOSITE ANODE MATERIAL DEVELOPED UNDER CONTRACT #NNX10CA51C. PSI WILL PRODUCE 250-500GRAMS OF COMPOSITE ANODE MATERIAL REPRESENTING A 5-10X SCALE-UP OF THE SBIR PHASE II EFFORTS. SYNTHESIS OF THE COMPOSITE MATERIAL WILL PROCEED VIA THE TECHNIQUES PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPED WHICH INCLUDE: CLEANING OF THE NANOFIBER MATERIAL TO REMOVE IMPURITIES APPLICATION OF A BINDING AGENT APPLICATION OF THE METAL SEED CATALYST THERMAL TREATMENT AND SILICON WHISKER GROWTH SEM IMAGES WILL BE UTILIZED TO VERIFY SUFFICIENT METAL SEED APPLICATION TO THE CARBON NANOFIBER MATERIAL ANDS CONFIRM THE GROWTH OF THE SILICON NANOWHISKERS. A SAMPLE(S) OF THE RAW MATERIAL WILL BE DELIVERED TO NASA GRC FOR TESTING, AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE. TASK 2: ELECTRODE DEVELOPMENT THIS TASK WILL FOCUS ON PRODUCING ANODE ELECTRODE MATERIAL FOR USE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF TEST CELLS AT PSI AND CYLINDRICAL CELLS AT A BATTERY MANUFACTURER. PSI WILL PREPARE SUFFICIENT ANODE SLURRY TO PRODUCE THE DESIRED AMOUNT OF ANODE ELECTRODE AT FRONTIER INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGIES, A PILOT CASTING FACILITY. THIS FACILITY HAS SLOT-DIE CASTING EQUIPMENT WHICH PRODUCES A HIGHLY REPEATABLE ELECTRODE OF SUFFICIENT QUALITY FOR UTILIZATION WITH BATTERY WINDING EQUIPMENT AND THEREFORE INTEGRATION IN WOUND CYLINDRICAL OR PRISMATIC CELLS. PSI WILL COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE ELECTROCHEMICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ANODE ELECTRODE PRODUCED AT PSI AND THE PILOT CASTING FACILITYFRONTIER. IN ORDER TO MEET THE TARGETED GOALS OF THIS PROGRAM, PSI WILL ALSO NEED TO PRODUCE THE CATHODE ELECTRODE REQUIRED FOR THE CYLINDRICAL CELL CONSTRUCTIONS. THIS ELECTRODE MUST BE PRODUCED IN THIS EFFORT DUE TO THE LIMITED COMMERCIAL AVAILABILITY OF ELECTRODE UTILIZING TODA S MNC-9100 OR SIMILAR OVER-LITHIATED NMC TYPE CATHODE MATERIALS TARGETED IN THIS EFFORT. ELECTRODE WILL BE PRODUCED BASED ON THE FORMULATIONS DEVELOPED UNDER CONTRACT #NNC09CA04C. IF TODA MNC-9100 IS UNAVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE, PSI WILL UTILIZE MNC-9121 OR SIMILAR COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE OVER-LITHIATED NMC TYPE CATHODE. PRODUCTION OF THIS ELECTRODE ON THE SAME DAY AS THE ANODE WILL MINIMIZE TOTAL SCALE-UP COST. AS WITH THE ANODE, PSI WILL COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE ELECTROCHEMICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ANODE ELECTRODE PRODUCED AT PSI AND THE PILOT CASTING FACILITYFRONTIER. SUFFICIENT ELECTRODE MATERIAL WILL BE PRODUCED TO SUPPORT LARGE CELL CONSTRUCTION AND PROVIDE NASA WITH MATERIALS FOR THEIR OWN ELECTROCHEMICAL TESTING.
