MODELS HAVE BEEN USED TO ESTIMATE SUBLIMATION AND TRANSPORT BUT MOST MODELS SEVERELY UNDERESTIMATE THE DEPTH OF BLOWING SNOW LAYERS OVER ANTARCTICA AND THEREFOR THE AMOUNT OF SUBLIMATION AND TRANSPORT. IN THIS PROPOSAL WE EXTEND NEW TECHNIQUES RECENTLY DEVELOPED BY THE AUTHORS TO ADDRESS QUESTIONS RELATED TO BLOWING SNOW TRENDS, VARIABILITY, TRANSPORT, SUBLIMATION, AND MASS BALANCE OF THE ANTARCTIC ICE SHEET. IN PARTICULAR OUR FOCUS IS IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: 1) CONTINUED ANALYSIS OF CALIPSO DATA AND AUTOMATION OF OUR MODIS BASED METHOD FOR BLOWING SNOW DETECTION TO OBTAIN A 10 12 YEAR HISTORY OF BLOWING SNOW EVENTS FULLY QUANTIFYING THE HEIGHT, OPTICAL DEPTH AND FREQUENCY OF THE LAYERS. 2) USE 1) TO QUANTIFY THE FREQUENCY AND LOCATION OF LONG DURATION EVENTS (STORMS) THAT ACT TO TRANSPORT SNOW MASS FROM CONTINENT TO SEA ICE/OCEAN. QUANTIFY MASS TRANSPORT OF THESE EVENTS. COMPARE WITH CURRENT SMB ESTIMATES. 3) DEVELOP MAPS OF AREAS OF LARGE SNOW DEPOSITION ON SEA ICE AND QUANTIFY THE MAGNITUDE IN TERMS OF PERCENTAGE OF PRECIPITATION. 4) EXAMINE TRENDS AND VARIABILITY AND DETERMINE POSSIBLE CONNECTION BETWEEN BLOWING SNOW FREQUENCY AND PRECIPITATION AND SAM AND ENSO. ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES AND TOOLS FOR OPTIMIZATION OF EUCLID DATA WILL BE DEVELOPED. A FINAL REPORT OF ANNUAL PROGRESS WILL BE DELIVERED AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT. THE CONTRACTOR WILL PROPOSE AN INNOVATIVE STUDY OF THE COSMIC INFRARED BACKGROUND (CIB) WITH EUCLID. LIBRAE WILL EXPLOIT PLANNED EUCLID IMAGING OF BOTH THE WIDE AND DEEP SURVEY REGIONS AT INFRARED AND VISIBLE WAVELENGTHS IN ORDER TO 1) MEASURE THE SOURCE-SUBTRACTED CIB STRUCTURE (FLUCTUATIONS) OUT TO SCALES OF A FEW DEGREES WITH BETTER THAN ~1% ACCURACY. THIS WILL ALLOW DISTINGUISHING THE NATURE AND PARAMETERS OF THE POPULATIONS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF THE CIB FLUCTUATIONS. 2) DETERMINE THE LYMAN BREAK, AND EPOCHS, OF THE POPULATIONS PRODUCING THESE FLUCTUATIONS BY EXPANDING THE SED OF THE MEASURED FLUCTUATIONS FROM 3-5 MICRON TO 0.5-5 MICRON. 3) CROSS-CORRELATE THE MEASURED FLUCTUATIONS WITH OPTICAL, IR, X-RAY, AND MICROWAVE IMAGING FROM A NUMBER OF OTHER FACILITIES. THESE INCLUDE BOTH THE SPITZER/IRAC AND HST/WFC3 INSTRUMENTS, TO HELP CHARACTERIZE STELLAR (NUCLEOSYNTHETIC) SOURCES OF THE CIB FLUCTUATIONS. THE CONTRACTOR WILL ALSO CROSS-CORRELATE WITH IMAGING FROM COEXTENSIVE X-RAY OBSERVED FIELDS, IN ORDER TO MEASURE THE CONTRIBUTION OF BLACK HOLES (AGN AND OTHER GRAVITATION OR ACCRETION-POWERED SOURCES) AMONG THESE SOURCES TO THE X-RAY BACKGROUND. CROSS-CORRELATING THE NEAR-INFRARED EUCLID CIB MAPS WITH PLANCK SUB-MM CIB AND CMB MEASUREMENTS WILL PROBE THE DUST EMISSION FROM THESE SOURCES AND CONSTRAIN ANY THERMAL SZ COMPONENT CONTRIBUTION. LIBRAE WILL THUS IDENTIFY THE NET EMISSIONS FROM THE FIRST STARS ERA, LEAD TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION OF INTERGALACTIC MEDIUM AT THAT EPOCH, ISOLATE THE CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE FIRST BLACK HOLES AND SHED LIGHT ON DUST CONTENT AT THOSE TIMES. THE PROJECT HAS POTENTIALLY TRANSFORMATIVE IMPLICATIONS FOR UNDERSTANDING THE EMERGENCE OF THE UNIVERSE OUT OF THE "DARK AGES". IT IS WELL ALIGNED WITH EUCLID MISSION OBJECTIVES, AND INDEED CAN BE DONE FROM NO OTHER FACILITY. |

WHILE IT IS RECOGNIZED THAT VARIOUS ATTRIBUTES OF THE MAIN INSTRUMENT ABOARD ICESAT-2 (ATLAS) PRODUCE CERTAIN LIMITATIONS ON THE ATMOSPHERIC DATA, IT WILL STILL PROVIDE USEFUL IN A NUMBER OF ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH AREAS. THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS TO IDENTIFY THOSE AREAS AND DEMONSTRATE THAT EVEN THOUGH ICESAT-2 IS NOT AN ATMOSPHERIC MISSION, IT WILL STILL PROVIDE IMPORTANT AND MEANINGFUL DATA THAT WILL BENEFIT ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE RESEARCH IN AREAS SUCH AS: 1) POLAR CLOUDS AND AEROSOL, 2)GLOBAL CLOUD FREQUENCY, 3) AEROSOL AND THIN CLOUD OPTICAL DEPTH, 4) BLOWING SNOW STUDIES. IN ADDITION TO THE VALUE OF ICESAT-2 DATA FOR ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE, THIS PROPOSAL WILL SHOW THE VARIOUS AREAS WHERE THE ATMOSPHERIC DATA CAN COMPLEMENT AND AID THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE MISSION: ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF SURFACE ELEVATION. WE WILL ALSO DEMONSTRATE THE UNIQUE QUALIFICATIONS OF OUR TEAM TO PROVIDE THE ICESAT-2 PROJECT WITH SCIENTIFIC FEEDBACK ON OVERALL MISSION PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF HIGHER LEVEL PRODUCTS, ATBD AND ALGORITHM DEVELOPMENT/TESTING, AND CALIBRATION AND VALIDATION PLANS AS THE MISSION TRANSITIONS TO ITS OPERATIONAL PHASE. |
