2011-06-242013-04-30541712SMAAART TASK - TASK TITLE: PROPULSION AIRFRAME AEROACOUSTIC (PAA) NOZZLE CONFIGURATION DEVELOPMENT 1.0 INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: PROPULSION AIRFRAME AEROACOUSTICS (PAA) IS AN ELEMENT OF NASAS ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE AVIATION (ERA) PROJECT. THE PAA TECHNICAL AREA IS FOCUSED ON IMPROVING THE UNDERSTANDING AND QUANTIFICATION OF PAA EFFECTS, PREDICTION TOOL DEVELOPMENT, AND NOISE REDUCTION TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT THAT ARE RELATED TO THE AEROACOUSTIC EFFECTS OF PROPULSION AND AIRFRAME INTEGRATION. PAA NOISE REDUCTION TECHNOLOGY AIMS TO REDUCE NET RADIATED NOISE TO THE GROUND BY REDUCING A NOISE SOURCE OR AN INTERACTION OF NOISE SOURCES THAT CAN BE DIRECTLY ATTRIBUTED TO EFFECTS OF PROPULSION AIRFRAME INTEGRATION. NASAS ERA PROJECT HAS A GOAL OF DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGY TO MEET AN AIRCRAFT NOISE GOAL OF 42 DECIBEL (DB) BELOW THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATIONS (FAAS) STAGE 4 CUMULATIVE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT. THE HYBRID WING BODY (HWB) AIRCRAFT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS ONE CONCEPT THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO MEET THE AIRCRAFT NOISE GOAL. THIS STATEMENT IS BASED ON CONSIDERABLE RECENT RESEARCH INCLUDING RESULTS FROM PREVIOUS TASKS WITH BOEING. NASA PUBLISHED IN AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF AERONAUTICS AND ASTRONAUTICS (AIAA) PAPER 2010-3913 RESULTS SHOWING A TECHNICAL PATH FOR A HWB CONCEPT TO MEET THE 42 DB GOAL. THIS STUDY INCLUDED EXPERIMENTAL DATA ACQUIRED ON THE LARC CONTRACT NNL04AA11B, TASK ORDER NNL05AD23T TO BOEING AND PUBLISHED IN AIAA 2010-3912. A CONTRACT WAS ALSO AWARDED TO BOEING AS A RESULT OF THE 2007 SUBSONIC FIXED WING PROJECTS ROUND 2 NASA RESEARCH ANNOUNCEMENT (NRA). THAT NRA AWARD TO BOEING (I.E., NNL07AA54C) RESULTED IN THE BOEING DESIGN OF A HWB AIRCRAFT CONCEPT TERMED THE N2A AND THE FABRICATION OF A WIND TUNNEL MODEL BASED ON THE N2A, THE QUIET-R1. THE QUIET-R1 WILL BE TESTED IN THE NASA LANGLEY RESEARCH CENTERS 14 BY 22 SUBSONIC WIND TUNNEL IN FY 2012 IN ORDER TO VALIDATE THE 42 DB NOISE GOAL AMONG OTHER OBJECTIVES. A KEY TO THE HWBS POTENTIAL TO MEET THE NOISE GOAL IS A SUCCESSFUL PAA STRATEGY FOR REDUCING THE JET NOISE COMPONENT OF THE TOTAL AIRCRAFT NOISE. THIS STRATEGY INCLUDES LOW FREQUENCY JET NOISE REDUCTION AND REDISTRIBUTION OF THE PEAK JET NOISE SOURCES SO THAT NOISE WILL BE REDUCED SUBSTANTIALLY BY SHIELDING FROM A LIMITED AIRFRAME SURFACE AFT OF THE NOZZLE EXIT PLANE. THIS STRATEGY IS IMPLEMENTED BY DEVELOPMENT OF A NOZZLE AND PYLON(S) CONFIGURATION. THIS PAA STRATEGY WAS CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED SUCCESSFULLY UNDER TASK ORDER NNL05AD23T AWARDED TO BOEING. HOWEVER, THAT DEMONSTRATION WAS FOR A LOWER BYPASS RATIO (7) ENGINE TYPE. FOR SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION TO THE HIGHER BYPASS RATIO (10) ENGINE TYPE ON THE N2A, THIS PAA STRATEGY REQUIRES APPLICATION OF WHAT WAS LEARNED IN TASK ORDER NNL05AD23T TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND SELECTION OF THE CONFIGURATION AND INTEGRATION OF THE NOZZLE AND PYLON(S) THAT WILL PRODUCE THE DESIRED RESULT ON THE ENGINE TYPE OF THE N2A. IT IS THIS DEVELOPMENT AND SELECTION THROUGH A DESIGN, FABRICATION, AND TEST PROCESS THAT IS THE PRIMARY SUBJECT OF THIS TASK ORDER. 2.0 SCOPE / OBJECTIVE(S): THE SCOPE OF THIS TASK ORDER IS TO BUILD UPON RESEARCH CONDUCTED UNDER LARC CONTRACT NNL04AA11B, TASK ORDER NNL05AD23T, HAVING DEVELOPED AND DEMONSTRATED THE CAPABILITIES AND EXPERTISE FOR PAA PYLON/NOZZLE INTEGRATION THROUGH MODEL SCALE DESIGN, FABRICATION, AND EXPERIMENTATION. MORE SPECIFICALLY, THE SCOPE OF THIS TASK ORDER INCLUDES: DEVELOP A SET OF NOZZLE CONFIGURATION CONCEPTS INCLUDING CHEVRON AND PYLON TECHNOLOGY DESIGN PARAMETERS. WHILE THE PRIMARY FOCUS IS FOR A BPR 10 JET NOZZLE, IT IS ALSO AN OBJECTIVE TO EXPAND THE BASIC UNDERSTANDING TO A HIGHER BPR OF BETWEEN 15 AND 18. DESIGN THE SET OF NOZZLE CONCEPTS INCLUDING AN ASSESSMENT OF PERFORMANCE IN ORDER FOR THE ACOUSTIC EVALUATION OF THE CONCEPTS TO BE PERFORMED ON AN EQUAL THRUST BASIS.
