STATE-OF-THE-ART AIRCRAFT AVIONICS ARE HIGHLY COMPLEX, FUNCTIONALLY INTEGRATED, NETWORK-CENTRIC SYSTEMS OF SYSTEMS. ENSURING THAT SUCH SYSTEMS ARE SAFE AND COMPLY WITH EXISTING AIRWORTHINESS REGULATIONS IS COSTLY AND TIME-CONSUMING AS THE LEVEL OF RIGOR IN THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS, ESPECIALLY THE VALIDATION AND VERIFICATION (V&V) ACTIVITIES, IS DETERMINED BY CONSIDERATIONS OF SYSTEM COMPLEXITY AND SAFETY CRITICALITY. THE VALIDATION AND VERIFICATION AND THE CERTIFICATION OF COMPLEX COMPUTER-BASED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS, INCLUDING SAFETY-CRITICAL SYSTEMS, ARE RECOGNIZED PROBLEMS OF NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE. AS THE COMPLEXITY OF THESE SYSTEMS CONTINUES TO INCREASE, THE V&V AND CERTIFICATION COSTS AND RELATED PROGRAMMATIC RISKS CAN PROVIDE A BASIS AGAINST THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW CAPABILITIES. SUCH OBSTACLES AGAINST INNOVATION POSE A THREAT TO NATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS AND CAN HINDER PROPOSED OPERATIONAL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE NATIONAL AIRSPACE SYSTEM (NAS) THAT ARE INTENDED TO INCREASE CAPACITY AND FLEXIBILITY, BUT WOULD ALSO INCREASE THE COMPLEXITY OF AVIATION SYSTEMS. NASA AIMS TO DEVELOP MULTIDISCIPLINARY KNOWLEDGE, METHODS, TOOLS, AND TECHNIQUES THAT ENABLE PREDICTABLE, TIMELY AND COST-EFFECTIVE DEVELOPMENT OF COMPLEX AND SAFETY-CRITICAL ONBOARD SYSTEMS. A CRITICAL ELEMENT OF THIS EFFORT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF ASSURANCE TECHNOLOGIES THAT ENABLE COMPREHENSIVE AND RIGOROUS SYSTEM SAFETY ASSESSMENTS. THERE ARE VARIOUS SAFETY ASSURANCE CONCERNS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN COMPLEX AVIONICS, INCLUDING UNCERTAINTY ABOUT THE NATURE AND NUMBER OF RESIDUAL DEVELOPMENT ERRORS. THERE IS ALSO A CONCERN THAT THE COMPLEX INTERACTIONS BETWEEN COMPONENTS (BOTH HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE COMPONENTS) ARE OFTEN NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD, ESPECIALLY UNDER FAILURE CONDITIONS. THERE IS A NEED FOR METHODS AND TOOLS THAT ENABLE AUTOMATED ANALYSIS OF COMPLEX INTEGRATED AVIONICS AND CAN PROVIDE ASSURANCE THAT SAFETY-RELATED REQUIREMENTS ARE SATISFIED WITHOUT UNDESIRED EMERGENT PROPERTIES. THERE IS ALSO A NEED FOR TOOLS THAT ENABLE EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT EXPLORATION OF THE SYSTEM DESIGN SPACE FOR DESIGN UPDATES AND MANAGEMENT OF SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS. IN ADDITION, THERE IS A NEED FOR TOOLS FOR AUTOMATED SYNTHESIS OF LARGE AND COMPLEX SYSTEMS THAT MEET THE FULL RANGE OF PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY SPECIFICATIONS. |
