THE WORK LEADING TO EARLY DETECTION OF FAILING CONNECTORS WILL ENCOMPASS CONTROLLED DEGRADATION OF AIRCRAFT CONNECTORS LEADING TO FAILURE MODES SIMILAR TO THOSE FOUND IN AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS, ELECTRICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF CONNECTORS AT DIFFERENT TIME INTERVALS DURING THE DEGRADATION PROCESS TO VALIDATE AND QUANTIFY THE LEVEL OF DEGRADATION, INTERROGATION OF CONNECTORS WITH REFLECTOMETRY PULSES DURING DEGRADATION PROCESSES, DEVELOPMENT OF PHYSICS-BASED MODELS FOR THE DEGRADED CONNECTORS, AND PROCESSING OF THE REFLECTOMETRY DATA USING ADVANCED SIGNAL PROCESSING METHODS TO INTERPRET FAULT SIGNATURES PRESENT IN ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS. THE TEAM WILL WORK IN CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH NASA RESEARCHERS DURING PROJECT EXECUTION. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED WORK IS TO CREATE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR EARLY WARNING OF ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FAILURE AND ONSET OF INCIPIENT DEGRADATION; PERMITTING CONDITION-BASED MAINTENANCE, AND REDUCE UNPLANNED DOWNTIME. IN SUPPORT OF THIS OVERALL OBJECTIVE THE TEAM S OBJECTIVE SHALL BE TO: I. DEVELOP CONNECTOR SETS WITH POTENTIAL FAILURE MODES THAT ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF DEGRADATION DUE TO THE OPERATING ENVIRONMENT OF AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS. THE FAILURE MODES WILL DISPLAY TYPICAL SEEN STABLE FEATURES AS WELL AS INTERMITTENT CHARACTERISTICS. II. DEVELOP DETECTION METHODS THAT ARE SENSITIVE TO SMALL AMOUNTS OF DEGRADATION (I.E., SMALL CHANGES IN ELECTRICAL IMPEDANCE) IN ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS. III. DEMONSTRATE EARLY DETECTION AND IDENTIFICATION OF INTERMITTENT CONNECTOR FAULTS AS A PRECURSOR TO OPEN/SHORT FAILURES BY ACQUIRING EXPERIMENTAL DATA, DERIVE PHYSICS-BASED MODEL PARAMETERS AND VARIABLE, AND PERFORMING ADVANCED SIGNAL PROCESSING ALGORITHMS. IV. SHARE THE DEVELOPED HARDWARE (I.E., THE SET OF CONNECTORS PREDISPOSED TO INTERMITTENT FAILURES) AND SOFTWARE ALGORITHMS WITH NASA ENGINEERS AND SUPPORT THE INTEGRATION OF FINDING AT NASA AMES RESEARCH CENTER. |
