THE PROPOSED RESEARCH EFFORT SHALL EXPLORE A HYBRID MATERIAL APPROACH TO DISK DESIGN BY PERFORMING ASSESSMENTS OF IMPROVEMENTS, DESIGN TRADE STUDIES, AND DESIGN ANALYSES. THE EFFORT SHALL INCLUDE TWO PHASES, PHASE I DESIGN OF A HYBRID DISK CONCEPT AND PHASE II INITIAL VALIDATION OF HYBRID DISK DESIGN CONCEPT. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PERFORM CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF A LEAST ONE HYBRID MATERIAL DISK MADE UP OF A POWDER METAL SUPERALLOY AND A SINGLE CRYSTAL SUPERALLOY. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL SELECT A PM SUPERALLOY FOR THE BORE/WEB AND A SX SUPERALLOY FOR THE RIM. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL THEN ANALYZE THE DESIGN(S) TO DETERMINE THE DEVELOPMENT PATH NECESSARY TO ATTAIN A TECHNOLOGY READINESS LEVEL OF 5 FOR NASA CONSIDERATION IN FUTURE PROGRAM PLANNING. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ESTIMATE IMPROVEMENTS OBTAINABLE, INCLUDING RELATIVE INCREASES IN COMPRESSOR EXIT TEMPERATURE, TURBINE INLET TEMPERATURE, OVERALL PRESSURE RATIO, AND FUEL EFFICIENCY FOR EACH PROPOSED ENGINE CONCEPT, USING AVAILABLE AND ESTIMATED MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF A PM SUPERALLOY BORE/WEB, COMBINED WITH A SX SUPERALLOY RIM. THE LONG-TERM OBJECTIVES FOR THIS RESEARCH ARE TO ASSESS THE OPERATIONAL BENEFITS AND LIMITATIONS OF HYBRID MATERIAL DISKS WITH THE EMPHASIS PLACED ON: 1) QUANTIFYING IMPROVEMENTS IN COMPRESSOR EXIT TEMPERATURE, TURBINE INLET TEMPERATURE, OVERALL PRESSURE RATIO, AND FUEL EFFICIENCY POSSIBLE FOR GAS TURBINE ENGINES HAVING COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS RELEVANT TO NASA N+3 GOALS; 2) IDENTIFYING THE MOST BENEFICIAL HYBRID MATERIALS, DISK CONFIGURATION, MATERIAL PROCESSING AND MATERIAL SLOT/JOINING, MATERIAL TRANSITION ZONE LOCATION AND REQUIRED PROPERTIES AND DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS; 3) IDENTIFYING THE LIMITING PROPERTIES AND DEVELOPMENT PATH NECESSARY TO DEMONSTRATE A TECHNOLOGY READINESS LEVEL OF 5.
