THE ADVANTAGE IS THAT THE PORTIONS OF THE COMPONENTS CAN BE DESIGNED TO SERVE AS THE STRUCTURAL MEMBERS, REDUCING OR ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR A COMPLETELY SEPARATE CUBESAT FRAME. THIS DESIGN ALLOWS FOR CONSIDERABLE SPACE SAVING AND SIMPLICITY IN THE FOOTPRINT OF THE PROPULSION SYSTEM. THE EXPANSION OF THIS TECHNOLOGY INTO A BIPROPELLANT SYSTEM IS STRAIGHT FORWARD. THE FABRICATED POLYMER MATERIAL USED IN RAPID PROTOTYPING IS SUITABLE FOR USE AS A FUEL GRAIN IN A HYBRID MOTOR. PREVIOUSLY, THE AEROSPACE CORPORATION WITH PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY HAS TESTED HYBRID ROCKET MOTOR FUEL GRAINS PRODUCED BY RAPID PROTOTYPING. THE MAJOR DISADVANTAGE OF MANY HYBRID MOTORS MADE OF THESE PRINTABLE PLASTIC IS THAT THEIR PERFORMANCE IS NOT AS HIGH AS OTHER MATERIALS AND LIQUID BIPROPELLANT SYSTEMS. HOWEVER, RECENT EXPERIMENTS THAT INCORPORATE NOVEL FLOW STRUCTURES SUCH AS SWIRL CHANNELS FOR THE OXIDIZER CHANNEL TO INCREASE PERFORMANCE HAVE BEEN DEMONSTRATED BY JOINT RESEARCH BETWEEN PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY AND THE AEROSPACE CORPORATION. THE COMBINATION OF CURRENT STATE OF THE ART RAPID PROTOTYPING OF HYBRID MOTOR WITH CURRENT MANUFACTURING OF PROPELLANT SYSTEMS IN CUBESATS COULD CONCEIVABLY PRODUCE A HIGH THRUST BIPROPELLANT MOTOR IN A COMPACT SPACE THAT SHOULD EASILY OUTPERFORM EXISTING COLD GAS THRUSTER TECHNOLOGY ON EXISTING CUBESATS AND COULD EASILY INCORPORATE MANY EXISTING TECHNIQUES USED TO PRODUCE PROPULSION UNITS IN CUBESATS. |
